How to Grow Broccoli Microgreens Hydroponically
Broccoli microgreens deliver concentrated sulforaphane (the cancer-fighting compound) at 100× the level of mature broccoli — and harvest in just 10 days.

Quick answer
Broccoli microgreens (Brassica oleracea) reach harvest in 10–14 days from seed at pH 6.0, EC 0.8, DLI 10, and air 18–24 °C. Among the most nutritionally concentrated microgreens — high sulforaphane content. Best in shallow tray systems (ebb-and-flow or wick) on hemp mats or coco coir pads.

| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| pH | 5.5–6.5 (6.0 ideal) |
| EC | 0.4–1.0 mS/cm |
| Air temp | 18–24 °C |
| Water temp | 18–22 °C |
| Humidity | 50–70% |
| DLI | 10 mol/m²/day |
| Photoperiod | 16 h |
| Spacing | 2 cm (dense) |
| Days to harvest | 10–14 |
| Yield/tray | ~150–250 g per 1020 tray |
The microgreen value proposition
Microgreens are seedlings harvested at the first-true-leaf stage. They concentrate nutrients dramatically — broccoli microgreens contain 20–100× the sulforaphane of mature broccoli per gram. The same applies (in varying compounds) to most microgreen varieties.
Commercial microgreens retail at $50–80/kg. Home production at $5–10/kg in inputs makes microgreens one of the highest ROI hydroponic crops.
Recommended system
Ebb and flow on a 1020 tray — the standard commercial microgreen setup. A capillary mat under the seed tray wicks water from a shallow nutrient reservoir below.
Wick system — simplest home option. Tray of media sits in a tray of nutrient solution; capillary action wicks moisture upward.
Hand-watering on hemp mats — non-hydroponic but simplest. Spray twice daily with diluted nutrient solution.
The 1020-tray workflow
Standard process for all microgreens:
- Day 0 — Soak seeds 6–12 hours.
- Day 0–1 — Spread soaked seeds densely on a damp hemp mat in a 1020 tray.
- Days 1–4 — Cover with another tray for darkness; mist daily.
- Day 4 — Remove cover, expose to light.
- Days 4–10 — Daily misting with diluted nutrient solution.
- Day 10–14 — Harvest with sharp scissors at the soil line.
A single 1020 tray produces 150–250 g of broccoli microgreens.
Variety / strain picks
- Calabrese broccoli — standard variety, reliable germination.
- Rapini / Broccoli Raab — slightly more bitter, intense flavor.
- Mixed brassica seed — broccoli + kale + radish + arugula in one tray for variety.
Light and temperature
- Air 18–24 °C. Wider range than mature plants.
- DLI 10. Much lower than mature crops. A cheap shop LED at 8 inches gives this.
- Photoperiod 16 hours.
- Humidity 50–70%. Lower humidity better for the final 3 days to prevent mold.

Nutrients
Microgreens grow primarily from seed reserves — minimal external nutrient required. At EC 0.4–0.8 mS/cm:
- Days 1–4: plain water (or 0.4 EC nutrient).
- Days 4–10: diluted nutrient at 0.6–0.8 EC.
Higher EC produces bitter microgreens; too low EC produces weak ones.
Common problems
- Mold on mat surface — humidity too high or too dense seeding. Reduce both.
- Damping off — fungal collapse at the stem base. Reduce moisture; improve airflow.
- Uneven germination — temperature gradient or inconsistent seeding density.
- Leggy, pale shoots — insufficient light. Move lamp closer.
- Bitter taste — over-mature; harvest at first true-leaf stage.
Harvest
Cut with sharp scissors at the media line when the first true leaves emerge (typically day 10–14). Rinse, spin-dry, and refrigerate immediately.
Microgreens keep 5–7 days post-harvest. For commercial sale, cut to order or within 24 hours of delivery.

FAQ
4 entries- Q01Why grow broccoli microgreens?
- Concentrated sulforaphane content — the bioactive compound that's been associated with cancer prevention research. A handful of broccoli microgreens provides what would require eating a kilogram of mature broccoli.
- Q02How long until harvest?
- 10–14 days from seed. Among the fastest microgreens.
- Q03Best media for broccoli microgreens?
- Hemp mats or coco coir pads. Both wick water from a shallow tray below; both are pesticide-free and food-safe.
- Q04Do I need a real grow light for microgreens?
- A cheap 5000K LED shop light at 6–8 inches above the tray is plenty. Microgreens need much less light than mature plants. See [lighting for seedlings and microgreens](/lighting/lighting-for-seedlings-and-microgreens).
