Hydroponics is growing plants in a nutrient solution instead of soil. The roots sit in water, clay pebbles or another inert medium, and you control the pH, the electrical conductivity (EC) of the solution and the daily light integral (DLI) directly. That control is why a hydroponic lettuce crop finishes in 28–35 days against 45–60 in soil — and why a mistake shows up in days rather than weeks.
Common questions
- Is hydroponics hard for a beginner?
- No, if you start with a leafy crop and one system. Lettuce at pH 5.5–6.5 and EC 0.8–1.2 in a Kratky jar needs no pump and no timer. The difficulty is not the plumbing, it is keeping the numbers stable.
- What do I need to measure?
- Three numbers cover most of it: pH, EC and water temperature. pH decides which nutrients the roots can absorb, EC tells you how concentrated the solution is, and water above 22 °C holds too little oxygen and invites root rot.
- Is Rootless Farm free?
- Start free with one system; Grower adds longer history and exports.
