The Ultimate Guide to Hydroponic Nutrient Deficiencies: Identify & Fix

In a soil-less environment, your plants are 100% dependent on you for their "food." When something goes wrong with the recipe, the plants will tell you—but they speak in colors and textures.

Identifying a deficiency early is the difference between a record harvest and a dead system. This guide covers the most common nutrient issues, how to spot them, and how to fix them without crashing your reservoir.

Mobile vs. Immobile Nutrients: The First Clue

Before you look at the colors, look at where the problem is starting.

  1. Mobile Nutrients (N, P, K, Mg): These can be moved by the plant from old leaves to new ones. If the problem is on old, bottom leaves, it’s likely a mobile nutrient deficiency.
  2. Immobile Nutrients (Ca, Fe, B, S): These are stuck where they land. If the problem is on new, top growth, it’s an immobile nutrient deficiency.

1. Nitrogen (N) — The Growth Engine

Type: Mobile | Target: Old Leaves

  • Symptoms: General yellowing (chlorosis) starting at the bottom of the plant. Growth slows down, and stems may turn reddish.
  • The Fix: Increase the base nutrient concentration (EC). Nitrogen is rarely "locked out" by pH unless the range is extreme.

2. Phosphorus (P) — The Energy Carrier

Type: Mobile | Target: Old Leaves

  • Symptoms: Leaves turn dark green, often developing purple or bronze tints on the underside. Tips may curl downward.
  • The Fix: Check pH first (P is hard to absorb below 5.5). If pH is fine, add a bloom-booster or increase base nutrients.

3. Potassium (K) — The Water Manager

Type: Mobile | Target: Old Leaves

  • Symptoms: "Burnt" or brown edges on the leaves. The center remains green, but the margins look scorched.
  • The Fix: Common in fruiting stages. Increase K-heavy nutrients. Watch out for high salt buildup in the reservoir.

4. Calcium (Ca) — The Cell Builder

Type: Immobile | Target: New Growth / Tips

  • Symptoms: "Tip burn" on lettuce or "Blossom end rot" on tomatoes. New leaves come out twisted or hooked.
  • The Fix: Add a Cal-Mag supplement. Crucial: Ensure you have enough airflow (VPD management). Calcium moves via transpiration; if air is too humid, calcium can't reach the tips.

5. Magnesium (Mg) — The Chlorophyll Core

Type: Mobile | Target: Old Leaves

  • Symptoms: "Interveinal chlorosis"—the veins stay dark green, but the space between them turns yellow.
  • The Fix: Add Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulfate) or a Cal-Mag supplement. Common in systems using RO water.

6. Iron (Fe) — The Catalyst

Type: Immobile | Target: New Growth

  • Symptoms: New leaves turn bright yellow or almost white, but the tiny veins stay green.
  • The Fix: Almost always a pH issue. Iron locks out above 6.5 pH. Lower your pH to 5.8 and watch for greening within 48 hours.

The "Checklist" Fix for Any Deficiency

Before you dump more chemicals into your reservoir, follow this 3-step audit:

  1. Check pH: 90% of "deficiencies" are actually "lockouts." If your pH is 7.0, your plant is starving for Iron and Manganese even if the water is full of them. Target 5.5 – 6.2 for most systems.
  2. Check EC (Strength): Is your reservoir too weak? Or is it so strong that "nutrient lockout" is happening due to salt competition?
